Under the allegory of a ship, the poet endeavoured to
disuade the Roman people from rushing again into the horrors
of a civil war.
  Oh ship! by recent tempest tost,
  So late arriv'd upon the coast;
  Thee, shall new storms involve again,
  Amidst the dread tremendous main.
